Track 3Where Do You Think You’re Going

1 pm. This song is when the day picks up. Honestly the first part of the song is a similarly relaxed sound, similar to “news”, but there moments where Knopfler shows off his voice a little and adds more energy.

Then, about 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the song, the drums pick up, guitars come in, and a legendary guitar solo is born. Its Sultan’s of Swing-esque, and one of the best instrumental parts of a song I’ve heard. Knopfler is legitimately not human with his guitar work here. You simply cant listen to this part of the song without falling in love with Dire Straits. Its not possible.

Its such a powerful shift here at the 2:30 mark, and I think this type of development within an album is part of what puts both Dire Straits and Communique in a tier of their own.

All of a sudden, you’re not sitting on your porch reading the papers anymore. Now you’re on a sailboat, cutting through the waves with the sun right above you. The water glimmers, and the wind blows your hat off into the ocean behind you. Its okay though because this song is just so addicting that you don’t have a worry in the world. Life is good.

“where do you think you’re going” is definitely where the day and energy picks up. You had a content and relaxed morning, and now the excitement and bliss of a coastal summer starts to fill you. You can also feel it in the title: where do you think you’re going. This inspires possibility and movement. The day is going somewhere, and you get to choose the destination.
