Track 2News
Its sorta in the name here. Around 11am, the morning time to yourself in that strange space in between breakfast and lunch. The cafes and restaurants might be busy, and people are enjoying themselves. However this song is sitting on your front porch, slowly reading the newspapers, and overlooking the coast. Its warmer now, and you see some sailboats out in the bay. A salty breeze moves the corner of your newspaper.
Unlike “once upon a time in the west”, which is lively and starts the day off with a bit of energy, “news” is more mellow and inward feeling. Its one of the most relaxed songs on the album, and it helps the album settle in to a chill and peaceful atmosphere. The song feels “unoccupied”, if that makes sense. Most songs that ive heard make it feel like something is happening, but “news” makes it feel like nothing is happening or needs to happen for that matter.
In our imaginary day that communique is, I think “news” is the point where you’ve relaxed and fully settled into the day. No morning rush, you can just enjoy the warm breeze and blue water, with a whole day ahead of you.
I think a lot of other guitarists try to develop songs by adding more notes, but some of the best parts of this song are when the guitar and drums relax, and when the track really leans into the peaceful and breezy atmosphere that it has.
You also can’t listening to “news” without falling in love with the bassline. John Illsley will forever be one of the most underrated bassists of all time, and he completes this song perfectly with his bass guitar. Similarly, Pick Withers adds an incredible drumline. His drumming is very simple and comforting and in signature Pick Withers fashion, his rhythm is the backbone to the whole song.
