Track 8Single-Handed Sailor
8pm. By this song, the sunset is definitely setting. You’ve made it back to your house but obviously you cant go inside yet; so you go grab an ice cream cone then head down to the beach. If the beaches and streets had people milling about earlier, they’re all gone by now. No chatter of conversations or squeaking of bike wheels, now you can only hear the waves and maybe some seagulls squawking.
Its definitely a beautiful sunset, and you can tell just from the guitar. In my opinion, this is some of the most beautiful guitar ever recorded. It’s the same bright and clear guitar that Dire Straits is known for, but its played in a slightly lower and mellowed tone here. This creates such a beautiful effect, its like the guitar seems to glow. Its hard to explain but you can see what I mean when you listen to it. Its almost like the notes are coming from the horizon.
I’ve said a few times throughout this that it sounds like sunlight reflecting off od water, but this is where that most exemplified I think. I swear you can see the colors of the sunset in the guitar and bass, you just have to open your ears enough.
“single-handed sailor” is one of those songs where its impossible to be unhappy while listening to it. If you’re ever sad about anything, listen to this song. It’ll cure you.
